Police rescue baby from pit

MITYANA - Police in Mityana have rescued a one-and-a-half-year-old baby from a pit latrine.

Preliminary investigations indicate that at Shell Wabigalo, Wabigalo LC1, Tamu division in Mityana district, an unidentified man heard a baby crying down a pit-latrine and immediately informed Augustine Wabkela, 22, a security guard attached to Neptune Security Services.

Wamala Police region spokesperson Racheal Kawala said upon inspection, Wabkela confirmed that a baby had been dropped into the pit latrine.

"He quickly mobilised the neighbours for assistance and informed our Police fire and rescue services," Kawala said in a statement on Sunday.

She stressed that under the leadership of Mityana district Police commander and the rescue services, they arrived at the scene in time and successfully rescued the unidentified baby boy, who is currently receiving treatment at Mityana General Hospital.

Kawala said a case of child desertion has been filed, and efforts are underway to locate the parents of the victim as the investigation progress.
